Report launch: Beijing-Copenhagen Joint Article on Climate Adaptation and Sponge City

The IWA World Water Congress will take place in Copenhagen from 11 to 15 September. Water management is a very hot topic globally and not least in China. Normally, many Chinese delegates attend the IWA World Water Congress, but unfortunately, this year it is not possible due to the Chinese Covid-19 restrictions for travellers.

However, Beijing will still be represented at the IWA World Water Congress. Through the Copenhagen - Beijing collaboration on sustainable urban development, a public presentation on the "Green Valley sponge city" will be held at the congress and a brand new article on Climate Change Adaptation and Sponge City in Beijing and Copenhagen is launched today.

In 2012, Beijing and Copenhagen became sister cities and in 2018 the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) on sustainable urban development was launched. The City of Copenhagen and the Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning and Design have been working together to inspire each other on climate change adaptation ever since. Amongst others, they have shared knowledge during the process of designing the beautiful “Green Valley” sponge city in the Beijing sub-district of Tongzhou.

The city-to-city collaboration not only facilitates the knowledge exchange on how to combat climate change and develop sustainable cities, it also promotes technological progress and inspires the two cities on issues like urban nature, biodiversity, citizens involvement, and liveability in cities.
