Public Workshop - Sponge City and Climate Change Adaptation in Beijing and Copenhagen

What master plans do the two sister cities have for climate change adaptation and what is a sponge city? How do the cities plan and implement? What are their greatest successes and biggest challenges? And how can the two cities inspire each other?

On June 15th 2022, a sponge city and climate change adaptation workshop will be held online to showcase the climate change adaptation solutions and master plans in Beijing and Copenhagen. At the same time, a preview of the coming exhibition “Beijing-Copenhagen A Fairytale of Two Cities: Imagine the Sustainable Future of Cities” will be introduced.

In 2012, Beijing and Copenhagen became sister cities and in 2018 the Strategic Sector Cooperation (SSC) on sustainable urban development was launched. The City of Copenhagen and the Beijing Municipal Institute of City Planning and Design have been working together to inspire each other on climate change adaptation ever since.  Amongst others, they have shared knowledge during the process of designing the beautiful “Green Valley” sponge city in the Beijing sub-district of Tongzhou.

The city-to-city collaboration not only facilitates the knowledge exchange on how to combat climate change and develop sustainable cities, it also promotes technological progress and inspires the two cities on issues like urban nature, biodiversity, citizens involvement, and liveability in cities.
