Meet the Consul General
On September 1st 2022, Ambassador Mikael Hemniti Winther was appointed as the Consul General of Denmark to Shanghai.
Ambassador Winther has a distinguished career as a Danish diplomat. He joined the Consulate General with substantial knowledge and experience from a number of senior positions within the Danish Foreign Service, serving most of his time in Asia and in various Departments in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen.
From 2008 to 2018 Ambassador Winther served as Denmark’s Ambassador to Iraq, to Thailand (with accreditations also to Myanmar and Cambodia) and to Bangladesh. He was the Deputy Head of Mission in Vietnam from 2001-2005 and First Secretary in Thailand from 1995-1998.
Ambassador Winther has also served in a number of positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Denmark. Those include Director in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Head of Department and Head of Division, including in the Asia Department. He also served in the Department of Humanitarian Affairs, Department for Multinational Organizations and Department for North America & Trade Policy.
Ambassador Winther holds a Master’s degree in Economics from Copenhagen Business School and has worked as an Associate Professor at Copenhagen University and Copenhagen Business School within the Institute for Political Science and the Institute for International Economics. In 2022 he was appointed External Examiner at the Copenhagen University, Institute for Political Science.
Mikael Hemniti Winther was born in London on 5 July 1960. He is married to Ratanawadee Hemniti Winther, a Thai born Canadian Citizen who is currently the Chairperson of AIP Foundation Thailand, and AIP Foundation Denmark, working to promote road safety in the Southeast Asian region and globally.
As Consul General of Denmark to Shanghai, Ambassador Winther is the Head of the Consulate General in the city of Shanghai and the surrounding provinces Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Jiangxi.
