Meet the Consul General

Consul General, Ambassador Jens Alsbirk

Jens Alsbirk is the newly appointed Consul General of Denmark in Shanghai. As of August 1th 2025, he has assumed leadership of the Consulate General in Shanghai, covering the city as well as the surrounding provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui, and Jiangxi.

Since the beginning of his career, Jens Alsbirk has held several senior positions within the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, both domestically and abroad. Most recently, he served as Deputy Head of Mission at the Royal Danish Embassy in Kyiv, where he was part of the management team of one of Denmark’s largest bilateral embassies. From 2018 to 2022, Jens Alsbirk held the position of Consul General at the Royal Danish Consulate General in Dubai, overseeing commercial relations and advisory services, consular affairs, and public diplomacy. From 2015 to 2018, he served as Chief Consultant at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Copenhagen.

With a long career in the Danish Foreign Service, this is not Jens Alsbirk’s first leadership role in China. From 2005 to 2009, he served as Consul General at the Royal Danish Consulate General in Guangzhou. His professional experience in Asia also extends beyond China and includes his tenure from 1999 to 2002 as Head of the Commercial Section at the Royal Danish Embassy in Hanoi. From 2009-2010 he also served as Team Leader for the North East Asia Desk at the Ministry’s headquarters in Copenhagen, where he was responsible for political relations with China, Japan, South Korea, and Mongolia.

Jens Alsbirk also has leading experience within the private sector. Between 2003 and 2004, he worked at the Confederation of Danish Industry (DI), where he was Deputy Head of Global Market Support and Area Manager for Asia. From 2010 to 2013, he served at Vestas Wind Systems as Director of Public Affairs.

The Consul General holds a BA and an MA in East European Studies from the University of Copenhagen and began his professional journey in 1996 as a trainee in the European Parliament.

He was born on May 17, 1969 AND raised in Gentofte, north of Copenhagen. With his wife Hanne Alsbirk, he has two grown children aged 24 and 26. He has great interest in foreign cultures and speaks several languages including German, Russian, Mandarin Chinese, French, and Ukrainian, in addition to Danish and English. His personal interests also include running and playing chess.
