The Greenland Representation in Beijing
The Greenland Representation handles Greenlandic official matters in People’s Republic of China and nearby East Asian countries.
The Greenland Representation opened in Beijing in November 2021.
About Greenland
Greenland or Kalaallit Nunaat – means “Country of the Greenlanders”. The world's largest island with 2.166.086 km2 situated in the Arctic on the Northern American continent.81 % of Greenland’s landmass is covered by ice, and the total population is just about 56,000, on an area 1/6 of Siberia ́s. Most of the population lives on the Southern West coast. This includes the capital Nuuk with around 18,000 inhabitants.
Greenland was a colony of Denmark until 1953, when Denmark had an amendment of the Danish Constitution in which Greenland had its status renewed and became a constituency in the Danish Kingdom alongside the Faroe Islands. However, with the fast growing modernization of the Greenlandic society, demands for greater economic and political independence grew as well. In January 1979 a referendum on greater autonomy was held and Greenland Home Rule was established.
At the change of the century the Government of Greenland, set in action the process of evaluating the Home-Rule agreement. On the National day, June 21st 2009, the Greenland Self-Government.
The Act on Greenland Self-Government opens for expansion and transfer of further competences and responsibilities from the Danish authorities to the Greenland authorities.

Greenland participates actively in Nordic co-operation, the Arctic council, the UN, the WTO and with the European Union and engages in bilateral communication with various countries around the world. Greenland is also a member of the Overseas Countries and Territories Association (OCTA).
Fishing is Greenland's single most important trade. Fishing for prawns, Greenland halibut, Cod, Redfish and some other species is regulated by quota and license regulations decided by the government. The private Polar Seafood Ltd. and the government owned Royal Greenland Ltd. are the two biggest companies and the have several factories and companies in different towns and in several countries in Europe.
Greenland has individual fishery agreements and arrangements with the EU, Faroe Islands, Iceland and Norway.
It’s important for the Greenlandic economy to diversify the sources of income and attract foreign investment to supplement the traditional hunting and fishing industries. In this context effort has been put in to developing the sector of green energy, mineral resources, tourism, and culture activities.
