About the Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands are a self-governing archipelago within the Kingdom of Denmark. The Faroe Islands consist of 18 volcanic islands that lie in the Northeastern Atlantic between Norway, Iceland and the United Kingdom.

The capital, Tórshavn, houses more than 40 percent of the population with its 20,000 inhabitants.

Only a decade ago, the Faroes were experiencing population decline, with many young people leaving, often in search of better opportunities. However, by 2017, the Faroe Islands had reversed the trend and the population reached an all-time peak of 50,000 inhabitants. By 2019, the population exceeded 52,000. This population growth is primarily related to significant economic growth of 4-7 percent annually since 2011.

Since the Home Rule Act of 1948 Faroe Islands has been a semi-autonomous region. Since 2005, the Faroese Government has also enjoyed autonomy in foreign relations, which has expanded the possibilities for the country to negotiate and conclude deals with other countries.

The Faroe Islands are a significant player in the global fish market. The clean, temperate waters of the North Atlantic provide ideal conditions for mackerel, herring, blue whiting, cod, lobsters, and farmed salmon. Fishing is the main occupation of the Faroese people.

The Faroese economy is gradually becoming more diversified. Important and growing economic sectors include shipping, maritime services, IT and telecommunications, financial services, construction, energy, creative industries and tourism.
