New research indicates that 39% of the global carbon emissions come from the construction sector, and in China 40-80% of all solid waste is construction waste. In this roundtable experts from the City of Copenhagen, the Beijing Municipality and the EU delegation to China will discuss circular construction approaches. Copenhagen is lead city in the innovative EU project CIRCuIT focused on circular construction and materials. Beijing has developed the first CO2 neutral area in China, the Shougang Park where the 2022 Winter Olympics will take place. Shougang Park is a ground-breaking example of how old concrete and steel structures from a former steel industry site, can be utilised in new, modern building.

Roundtable 2: Circular Economy – Waste Management: From Waste to Resources

16:00-18:00 (Beijing time), 10:00-12:00 (Danish time)
Access via Zoom

China is the world’s largest waste generator and the exponential trend in waste output is expected to continue. When moving towards a circular economy this fact needs to be addressed. The question is how can we promote a green society with sustainable waste management? This requires waste reduction, waste recycling, waste reuse, better – but less - landfill and energy efficient incineration. In this roundtable we will ask policy makers to elaborate on their waste management strategies looking ahead into the targets in the 14th Five-Year Plan. Chinese and Danish industry will share their recent successful cases and plans within waste management solutions in China and we will ask the question: How does your organisation contribute to solving the growing waste crisis?

The potentials of circular economic business models are unquestionable. With the potentials in mind, it is timely and worthwhile to ponder on the hindrances and barriers to scaling the circular economy. What is stopping us from moving from inspiring examples to full-scale, global implementation? Leading researchers from China and Denmark will discuss these obstacles and explore how research and innovation can contribute to overcoming the hindrances. We will look at the unanswered questions and discuss which topics that belong on the global research agenda. What are the big unknowns for scholars in circular economy?
