‘Nordic Echo’, a Danish-Chinese joint music project featuring songs from the famous Danish songwriter Sebastian, in cooperation with established Chinese musicians, can be found on Tencent music from 1 August.

What happens when Chinese artists interpret the music of a Danish legend?

The answer could be found on 8 August, when an intimate concert took place at the Royal Danish Embassy in Beijing, much to the delight of invited guest. With their distinctive style and compositions, established Chinese musicians including folk singer Chen Hongyu and folk/rock band Low Wormwood invited listeners into the world of Sebastian, the Danish equivalent of Leonard Cohen.

Born in 1949 with the birth name Knud Grabow Christensen, Sebastian is a household Danish songwriter, composer, singer, and guitarist whose music career spans over five decades. With several musical and opera successes behind him and record sales of more than 2 million, a remarkable number for a country of just five million people, he has made an undisputable mark on the Danish music scene.

Morten Luxhøi, the brain behind Sebastian in China project, explains that the music of Sebastian is universal and his lyrics work well when translated into Chinese, which prompted him to cooperate with Chinese musicians.

“It’s been important for us to match the songs and artists in such a way that it supports their existing profile and style, because our hope is that these songs will have a new life in China. That’s why the artist has been very much involved choosing their song and developing the right sound.”

Titled ‘Nordic Echo,’ the album consists of 10 famous Sebastian songs, which are translated into Chinese and interpreted by established Chinese artists. The line-up include Moxi Zishi, Chen Hongyu, Cheng Bi, Low Wormwood, Kulu, L.X.Y, Haiqiao Xu, Doris Ho, Adai Song, and Danni Ye.

At the Royal Danish Embassy in Beijing the initiative to a musical co-production is welcomed:
”I am very happy that one of Denmark’s greatest song writers has been translated into Chinese and that common joy for music has resulted in this cooperation and exchange on music and culture between Denmark and China”, says Helle Meinertz, Deputy Head of Mission from the Royal Danish Embassy in Beijing.

After half a year of preparations, recordings and production, the Danish music publisher Edition Wilhelm Hansen and Tencent Musician, China’s leading online music streaming platform, releases the music.

From 1st of August and the following ten weeks, one classic Sebastian song will be available on the streaming services of Tencent Music Entertainment across China each week, until the entire album will be accessible in October.
