Celebration of 50 years of diplomatic ties between Denmark and Mongolia

On November 8th 2018, Denmark and Mongolia will mark 50 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations at an official celebration in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

To mark the golden jubilee, representatives from the Royal Danish Embassy in Beijing, the Royal Danish Honorary Consulate in Mongolia and the Mongolian Embassy in Stockholm will participate in the celebration along with 200 invitees from parliament, the business community as well as academic and cultural partners.

As part of the official celebration a special screening of the documentary The Great Game by Michael Haslund-Christensen and director Andreas Dalsgaard will be shown. The documentary is a tribute to Michael Haslund-Christensen’s father and grandfather – the Danish explorer, Henning Haslund-Christensen.

Henning Haslund-Christensen (1896-1948) played a vital role in the establishment of relations between Denmark and Mongolia. The close historical bonds were shaped during Haslund-Christensens travels to Mongolia in the 1920’s-1930’s. Today his grandson Michael Haslund- Christensen is Mongolia’s honorary Consul in Denmark.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union and the first democratic elections in Mongolia in 1990, Denmark established a partnership with Mongolia helping to foster new democratic institutions. Danish companies are active in Mongolia in the field of sustainable use of natural resources and energy supply.

This year has seen an upsurge in the cultural cooperation between the two countries. A unique exhibition of the heritage of Genghis Khan presently on show in Denmark. And close scientific cooperation is ongoing to analyse the remains of a possible Genghis Khan warrior excavated in Mongolia.
